Hi guys! I am so excited that we have finally gotten started on our master bedroom update. It’s the only room in the house (of course!) that we haven’t touched since moving in, so it’s a long time coming. Today I thought I would share the pitiful before pictures of our master bedroom update and let you all know my design plan for the space.
This is one of the rooms in our house that has a lot of interesting and original features. The original fireplace (although now gas), shiplap walls, high ceilings, transom window, thick moldings, and big windows. This room has a lot of charm. Because of that, I’ve felt kind of stuck on what to do in here for awhile. My last post talked about that a bit- I didn’t want to do a strictly farmhouse look in here, but I still love all of the original features and even want to highlight them. I’ll get into the design plan in just a bit. Here’s the before pics. Sorry in advance for the terrible pictures- I only had my iPhone for these!
The Before Pictures:
What I’m planning to keep
The bed was my grandparents- it was the bed that I used to sleep in when I visited them when I was a little girl- it is staying, and will stay unpainted. The aqua quilt is also a family heirloom and will stay, but will be an accent piece. The side table is a recent thrifting score, and will stay, but may have a change in finish- can’t decide. The dresser and TV will stay. The rug is fairly new to me, but vintage-ish- it was a recent Hunt find (the lady tried to sell it to me as an antique- but it has a Sears tag on it lol). A lot of the design plan was built around the rug actually. Here’s a closer look:
See the bits of pink and blue in it? I love how they play with the red in the rug.
The plan and what’s changing
I am going for a coastal farmhouse style in the bedroom. Not traditional beach house with a lot of bright colors (although I do like that style). This is how I envision this master bedroom would look if this home were located on the coast. Understated coastal that nods to the farmhouse style of the home.
The walls, ceiling, and trim have already been painted! The walls are white, ceiling is a dark charcoal/almost black color, and the trim is pink. I’ll go over the reason for my color choices in another post 🙂
The fireplace will get a big update! I’ll put a clear poly or maybe Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil on the fireplace and completely retile with a really nice marble tile.
The fan is staying. I’d love to have a beautiful chandelier- but that’s just not practical in Georgia. I’ve got a plan for a simple but chic update that will make a huge difference!
Bedding will be completely updated. I’ve ordered and it’s on the way!
The only thing I haven’t decided on yet is window treatments. I know I’m not doing drapes (I think)- I’m debating between simple white roman shades and bamboo shades. Because of the size of the windows, everything will have to be custom, so I need to make a decision and get moving!
So that’s it! Monday, I’ll give you guys an update and some pictures of the progress. I hope to have some progress on the fireplace by then!
I cannot wait to see what you do here Beth and that rug literally has me drooling! Great find!
Thanks! I’m so excited that we have finally gotten started! And how funny that both of us picked coastal themes for our new bedroom makeovers 🙂
