Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed this week’s Monday, Monday! Those posts are always so fun for me to write, and I hope they are helpful for you as well. Okay, so you all know my issues with organization, and that our mudroom has a serious lack of it. I’m trying to be more intentional with this design, and I’m really putting some thought into our mudroom organization strategy.
Our issues
So we’ve got three main problems I’m trying to solve.
Mudroom organization- adding hooks
First, we definitely don’t have enough hooks for all of the coats, hats, backpacks, and bags that appear.
This is definitely a paired down version of what is normally going on in here.
It’s an easy fix, actually. I’m planning to add wainscoting to the entire room, and add a lot more hooks along the entire wall. Something like this:
Adding hooks is such an easy and inexpensive way to add usable storage to a room! It’s one of the main reasons (besides the eaten molding that I talked about in my last post) that I really wanted to start over with this room. (The mantel will be moved to the entryway).
Mudroom organization- wall storage (affiliate links included, see my disclosures here)
This one I’m super excited about! Not adding enough wall storage was one of my biggest mistakes with the old mudroom. Here’s the blogger styled version of my wall storage before:
And here’s what it usually looked like:
A disaster. It just couldn’t hold all of the stuff that we receive on a regular basis.
I may go a bit overboard with the wall storage in this space. Here’s what I’m eyeing:
Here’s what I’ve learned with mudroom organization:
- If you are slow to move all of the paper that builds up to your “other” storage (wherever you file stuff), then more closed storage would be better. Just so you aren’t looking at the mess all of the time.
- If you’re planning to have pens, markers, etc., in this area, you’ll need something other than just the wire storage options. Those suckers just don’t stay put in the wire ones.
- Don’t forget storage for your pet stuff! A place to hang the leash so you’re not constantly looking for it as you head out the door. A simple hook, something that is built right into a lot of wall organizers, does the trick.
- Finally, will you really use a chalkboard? We had one once and didn’t. But it sure looked cute 🙂
Mudroom organization- shoe storage
This one I’m iffy on. We haven’t had shoe storage in a long time, and now the boys are really good at putting their shoes up. It’s been kind of nice to not have the visual clutter in the mudroom. But we also track a lot of mud and dirt through the house. It might be good to have some option for shoe storage in the mudroom.
Here’s what I’m thinking about:
