Some of the most common questions that I get is about our library hanging chair. People want to know if it is practical, how hard it was to hang up, if the kids are constantly swinging like little monkeys in it. I thought I’d devote a whole post to answering some of those questions.
Why we chose a hanging chair, and is it practical?
I know it was a bit of an unconventional choice for that space. I chose it for a few reasons:
- I really wanted some seating in that small corner, but it couldn’t take up a ton of visual space- and a real chair behind that door would have looked weird
- I wanted this library to be a fun space for the kids, and I knew they would love it
- I wanted to add a bit of quirk to this entire room
It has not disappointed. It fits perfectly in that little area, and since this is a dark room, that’s pretty much the only space in the room that gets any amount of sunlight- making it a perfect spot to sit and rock in the sun. And it’s definitely a conversation starter 😉
Installing the hanging chair
Honestly I didn’t do a whole post on this because it was actually pretty easy to do, even with our 12 foot high ceilings. All that we used was a long eye bolt screw (I can’t remember the exact size, but I think 5 in. long), found our ceiling joist, pre-drilled, and screwed the eye bolt into the joist. The chair came with all of the hardware needed to simply attach the chain to the eye bolt.
We did go up into the attic several times to make sure that we hit the right spot (I was paranoid about the screw going into the side of the joist and not in the middle).
I’d say it took a few hours to do, but part of that is the difficulty of working with such tall ceilings. If your ceiling height is a more standard 8 feet, this would probably be an hour or so project.
Are the boys constantly swinging from that chair?
A close second to this question is, how beat up are the walls from that chair?
Of course, when we first got it, the boys (especially my little Beau) were constantly trying to test how far they could go with it. I’d find Beau in the chair kicking off against the wall. If those walls weren’t dark shiplap, there’s no telling what they would look like!
But that’s settled down now. They use it like I do- as a super comfy spot to just chill.
And Beau’s friends think it is the coolest.thing.ever!
Final thoughts on the hanging chair
I love this chair. I still think this is one of our best home purchases. It’s super comfy and relaxing. It’s the first spot that people go to in this room, and once they sit down, it’s hard to get them up. If we ever moved, I would definitely want to take it with us!
This chair is sold out from Pier 1, but I’m linking some others (affiliate) at different price points below:
Beth I love this chair and the fact that the kids are able to give it a hard time and its still standing! Thanks for the review, we’re going to be redoing our littles room soon and have planned on adding one in there for a while but I wasn’t sure how it would hold up so thank you!
Ashley, she will LOVE the hanging chair! I promise you, it will be one of your best purchases for that room! You will find yourself in her room using it yourself. Or maybe that’s just me… 😉
